Custom Access Code Creation FAQ

Q: Can I pick a custom code for guests and visitors?

A: No, our system currently only supports custom codes for residents to access their own unit doors. All guest codes (temporary, recurring, and delivery) are randomly generated and are not customizable.


Q: Why don’t I see the option to create a custom access code in my app?

A: The custom code feature must be enabled by your property. Please contact your property directly to enable this feature. This feature is also only available for version 2.8.0 or newer of our SmartRent mobile app. Custom access codes are not able to be created on the web version of our application.


Q: The system is indicating there’s an error with my custom code. How do I fix it?

A: Be sure to check that your code is not violating system rules. Your code cannot be the same number in a repeating sequence (e.g., 1111) or a consecutive sequence of numbers (e.g., 1234 or 4321). You should also make sure your hub and lock are online; if it’s not, the code will not be added to your lock. If you’re following all the security rules, your hub and lock are online, and you are still experiencing issues, please contact SmartRent support for help with troubleshooting the issue.


Q: Do I have to update my code or can I keep the one I have?

A: It’s entirely up to you. You may choose to keep your existing code if you’d like or you can update it to a custom code if enabled by your property.


Q: Can I create a custom code for access to community amenities or property doors?

A: No, this feature is only available to residents for accessing their own unit doors at this time.


Q: Is it possible for another resident to have the same code as me?

A: Yes, while it is possible, it is unlikely that two residents will select the exact same code. A 4-digit code has 10,000 possible combinations, and a 6-digit code has 1,000,000 possible combinations. If you’re concerned about this scenario, you can utilize the randomly generated code feature or keep the code you currently use.


Q: How do I create a custom code in the resident app?

A: In the SmartRent app, select Access, tap on My Access, then tap Pick a Code and select Custom Code. More details are presented in this article.


Q: Can I choose any numbers I want for the custom access code?

A: There are two rules to follow when creating your access code:

  1. The code cannot be the same number in a repeating sequence (e.g., 1111)
  2. The code cannot be a consecutive sequence of numbers (e.g., 654321 or 123456)


Q: How many digits can my custom access code be?

A: Your custom code can be 4 or 6 digits in length.


Q: How do I reference back to my custom access code after it has been created?

A: You can view the custom access code you created by tapping on Access and then tapping on the green My Access bar in your SmartRent mobile app.
