How to Link Nest Thermostat to SmartRent System

We are very excited to be a part of the Works with Nest program! This means that you are able to control your Nest Thermostat (3rd Gen) or Nest E Thermostat through the SmartRent app. However, in order to pair your Nest Thermostat to SmartRent, you first need to have a Nest Account, you then need to pair your Nest Thermostat to your local WiFi network, and finally, your Thermostat must be connected to your Nest Account. Once you have completed the steps below, you will be able to connect your Nest to your SmartRent account:


Getting Started with your Nest Thermostat

Signing up for a Free Nest Account
You’ll see a button to Sign up for a free account on the Nest app login screen. You’ll need to enter your email address and choose a password. Once you’ve signed up you’ll receive a confirmation email.

Note: You’ll need to be able to touch your thermostat to add it to your account in the Nest app. This means that you won’t be able to add it remotely. After you’ve added your thermostat to your account you’ll be able to use the Nest app on your phone, tablet, or computer to control your thermostat from anywhere.

To connect your Nest thermostat to your account, you’ll get an entry key from your thermostat and enter it with the Nest app.

Pairing Nest Thermostat to Wi-Fi

  1. Press your thermostat’s ring to open the Quick View menu.
  2. Select the Settings icon.
  3. Choose Network.
  4. Your thermostat will take a moment to scan for available networks. Choose your home Wi-Fi network from the list.
  5. Enter your password if prompted.
  6. If the password was entered correctly then the thermostat will now be paired to your wifi.

Pairing your Thermostat to your Nest Account

Get an entry key from your thermostat:

  1. Press your thermostat’s ring to open the Quick View menu.
  2. Choose Settings.
  3. Turn the ring to Nest app and press the ring to select it.
  4. Select Get Entry Key to retrieve a unique entry key. Follow the next steps below to use your Nest app to add your thermostat to your account.

Enter the key in the Nest app:

  1. Open the Nest app and sign in to your account if prompted.
  2. From the home screen, tap the Settings.
  3. Tap Add product.
  4. Tap Continue without scanning and then select the type of Nest thermostat you're trying to add.
  5. Follow the Nest app’s instructions. When prompted, type in the entry key on your thermostat’s screen.

Once you’ve entered the key, the Nest app will add your Nest thermostat to your account. You’ll see your thermostat appear on the Nest app home screen. Tap your thermostat icon to control it and change settings. Visit this article to learn more about how to use your thermostat and change settings:

  1. You can create an account with the Nest app on a phone, tablet, or computer.
  2. Download the Nest app on your phone or tablet from the Apple App Store or Google Play.
  3. Open the Nest app and tap Sign up.
  4. Enter the email address you'd like to use.
  5. Enter a password at least 8 characters long. It needs to have at least two of the following:
  • Upper and lowercase letters (ABC/abc)
  • A symbol (!#$)
  • A number (123)
  • Read and agree to the Nest Terms of Service.
  • Check your email for a Welcome to Nest email titled "Please verify your account email address." Open this email and tap the included link to activate your account. If you don't get the welcome email:
  • You might have entered the wrong email address. Double check that you signed up for an account with the correct email address.

    Connecting your Nest Thermostat to SmartRent

    Adding your Nest Thermostat to the SmartRent App

    1. Login to SmartRent in your web browser (not in the app)
    2. Click on Home
    3. Click on +
    4. Click on Thermostats from the list of device types
    5. Click on Nest
    6. You will be prompted to either create a new nest account or sign into your existing nest account. Please select the option that best suits you.

    8. Once you click Allow, you will be sent back to the SmartRent for you to select your Nest device(s). Check the box of the device(s) you wish to add and click Add Thermostat.
    9. After a few minutes, you will see the thermostat added to your list of devices in SmartRent. If you don't see the thermostat added after 10 minutes, please contact SmartRent Support.
